Proven and effective leadership on issues that matter
Senator Kathy Saltzman was elected to the Minnesota State Senate in 2006 and represents eleven communities in central Washington County. She has combined her two passions—business development and education—to make significant contributions in the areas of improved early reading success for children, education reform and job growth in Minnesota's most promising growth sectors. She has been recognized both locally and nationally for her work and leadership in all three policy areas.
In addition to serving as Vice-Chair of the Senate's Business, Industry, and Jobs Committee, Kathy has been a conference committee member for the E-12 Education Finance and Policy Committee for the past four years and a member of the Transportation Finance and Policy Committee. She has also served as chair of two education subcommittees on Charter School Reform and Early Intervention and Literacy. Senate leadership appointed her to serve on the Joint Committee to Investigate the I-35W Bridge Collapse, Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission and ServeMinnesota.
Prior to her election, Kathy worked with over 60 Minnesota school districts in advocating for more fair school funding formulas and taxpayer equity. Her ability to work with members of all political parties resulted in legislation that not only provided greater adequacy and equity in funding for local schools, but also significant property tax relief for local taxpayers. She has also worked in outreach and marketing at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic, and in 1993, was appointed by St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman to serve on both his transition team and staff.
A graduate of the University of Iowa, Kathy has called Minnesota home since 1979. She, her husband Ted—a small business owner, and their two children have lived in Woodbury for the past sixteen years and value the strong sense of community and family, recreational opportunities, and natural resources in the St. Croix Valley. Her son, Elliot is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College and her daughter Hilary, is a student at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management.
Committed to stronger schools, communities, and businesses
Kathy believes that our communities are stronger when citizens are engaged and involved in service. This past year, Kathy led efforts with other elected officials and local community leaders in Washington County to develop greater awareness and support for military members and their families through the National Guard’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program. She has worked actively with local Woodbury and Stillwater Area Chamber leaders to be a stronger voice for the business community and advance needed east metro transportation improvements.
As a parent of children attending Stillwater Area Schools, Kathy was a founding member of the district’s first parent legislative action network. She has served on school board committees, been involved with the Partnership Plan, and helped establish the Stillwater Orchestra Legacy Fund.
