Senator Saltzman to host Senate Education Committee on January 23rd
Presentation by local school districts will focus on impact of testing on student achievement
The Senate Education Policy Committee will travel to Woodbury on Tuesday, January 23rd for a site visit and special presentation by local school officials on the impact of testing in local schools.
Senator Kathy Saltzman (DFL-Woodbury), a member of the Senate Education Committee, will host the meeting on behalf of the South Washington County and Stillwater Area school districts. The meeting will be from 6 - 8 p.m. and will be held at Liberty Ridge Elementary School in Woodbury.
Staff from both South Washington County and Stillwater Areas schools will be involved in the presentation. Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to attend and are invited to speak to the committee, as well.
"Parents and teachers have expressed concerns about the number of tests being given to our children," said Saltzman. "This hearing will provide an opportunity for committee members and the public to learn about the various tests being delivered in local schools. While tests contribute to greater accountability, they also need to serve as a tool for boosting individual student achievement. We need to learn which tests provide the most timely and meaningful information to teachers and parents and how that information is then useful in reaching higher student achievement."
Saltzman stressed that the committee is especially interested in hearing from parents and other community members on this issue and encourages them to attend.
"The state and local school districts are investing significant resources into our testing programs and we need to know if the information being gathered is useful and of value," she added.
